Hobart braces for three-day lockdown after COVID hotel quarantine breach



The ABC understands the Tasmanian government is meeting with Public Health to discuss further COVID measures including a short, sharp three-day lockdown in the south.The government will hold a COVID press conference at 2:30pm AEDT.It comes after a¬†31-year-old man flew into Hobart from Melbourne on Monday without the appropriate border pass.He was taken to a¬†quarantine hotel in Hobart’s CBD but security guards discovered he was missing from his room on Tuesday afternoon. Shoppers were already lined up at Woolworths in Sandy Bay before any official lockdown announcement.(ABC News: Airlie Ward)Police found him at a home in Bridgewater at 4:45pm the same day, and has since been transferred to the Fountainside medi-hotel in Hobart’s CBD.He was tested for coronavirus and returned a positive test.It is not yet known how the man left hotel quarantine, and there is no CCTV showing how or where the man left the Travelodge.Footage obtained by the ABC appeared to show the man outside the Travelodge at 10:50pm on Monday, less than an hour after he was placed into hotel quarantine. The man appeared to be captured by a nearby CCTV camera after leaving the Travelodge on Monday night.(Supplied)Premier Peter Gutwein told state parliament yesterday the man was being “not cooperative” and has refused to wear a face mask since he tested positive COVID.Yesterday, Public Health confirmed the man had visited a Woolworths in Bridgewater between 3:30pm and 4:00pm, prompting hundreds of people to turn out for testing at a new drive-through clinic in Gagebrook today.The pop-up clinic at Cris Fitzpatrick Park in Gagebrook opened at 8:30am and will operate until 3:30pm.A walk-in vaccination clinic is also available at the nearby Brighton Civic Centre.
