A second Tiger tests positive for COVID; Drew Carlton called up from Toledo



DETROIT — Detroit Tigers left-handed reliever Miguel Del Pozo was placed on the COVID injured list after testing positive Friday morning.Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said Del Pozo felt ill on Thursday night and a test confirmed COVID-19.Del Pozo is the first Tiger to test positive since a mini-outbreak four days ago in Pittsburgh.Reliever Joe Jimenez and bench coach George Lombard tested positive. Pitching coach Chris Fetter, quality control coach Josh Paul and bullpen catcher Jeremy Carroll have been quarantining for the last four days due to contact tracing, meaning they had close or extended contact with Jimenez or Lombard.“I thought we were in the clear, given that we had gone three or four days from from our last positive test,” Hinch said.Additional tests were run on Friday but there were no more positives.Del Pozo, 28, has appeared in five games this year for the Tigers, allowing two earned runs in 5 1/3 innings.Drew Carlton was recalled from Toledo to replace him.Carlton, who turned 26 on Wednesday, made his Major League debut six days ago, requiring just one pitch to get one out. He pitched two scoreless innings in Monday’s loss and was optioned after the game.Additionally, Hinch announced that Alan Trammell, a special assistant to the GM, would serve as bench coach during Lombard’s absence.Double-A Erie catcher Jon Rosoff was also added to the staff as a bullpen catcher for the homestand. Rosoff, 26, went to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and has been in the Tigers’ organization since 2018.
